Wisdom tooth?

Wisdom tooth.. just had my wisdom tooth removed two months ago by surgery of course.. and you know what.... from what I can say it is the most excruciating moment of my life back there in  that operation room...( though ive been numbed by the local anaesthetic) so what is widom tooth actually...?

The wisdom tooth also known as gigi bongsu as my mother said.... actually I do not know the exact name of wisdom tooth in malay as I studied this tooth in english.. so I just ask my mother... apa nama gigi yang paling ujung sekali tu....? and she said its gigi bongsu because it only erupted at the age of 18-25 years old... so in medicine the wisdom tooth is the 3rd molar.. the 3rd molar is the last teeth to be erupted in a human life.. its easy to find the 3rd molar as it is situated at the last position in your jaws... basically a normal person has about four wisdom tooth: 2 on the lower jaw (mandible) and the other 2 is on the upper jaw (maxilla)... but usually not all wisdom tooth will be erupted or even exist in many people... as I my case I only got 2 wisdom tooth on my mandible...

So why do I have my wisdom tooth removed?

As you can see from the picture, the wisdom tooth situated at the last position on our mouth and usually the wisdom tooth can grow in many angles.. and normally it will grow just in an upright angle and assembly itself with the other teeth in a perfect straight line... but abnormally it will grow in different angles and with this different angles it can cause pain and inflammation if the tooth grow horizontally or impacted just as the picture above... and also the impacted wisdom tooth can accumulate  pieces of food that we eat and stuck there for days, as it is very hard to remove the food there... later on bacteria will accumulate at site of food and causing many complications such as cavity and dental caries..

So in order for people who have wisdom tooth problem , it is advisable for them to have a tooth extraction in order to prevent the spread of infection to nearby teeth...

Treatment:

Treatment for wisdom tooth is usually by surgery removal of the affected tooth.... and for the pain management usually will be given anaelgesic drug to reduce the pain.

After surgery:

Well from what  I've been done after the surgery, the most important tips for speed up the healing are:

  • Do not wash your mouth for 3 days... why? because washing of mouth after 1-3 days after the surgery will make the blood clots at the site of socket to be detached and this detachment will later on causing the nerve inside the socket to be exposed to anaything that you eat... even exposure to the water that you drink can cause severe pain of the jaw.... so from my experience of after the surgery, I did not wash or brush my teeth for almost a week...

  • Use antiseptic liquid such as Listerine after day 3 to prevent the infection of the mouth and to kill bacteria that may present...

  • Do not eat hard food: eat only soft food such as youghourt, porridge and bread..

  •  Rest: Have a good rest after the surgery to speed up the recovery process..

  • Usually the pain will start to disappear after 3 days... and in my case it only took 2 days... The pain is off course related on how you manage your mouth after the surgery...

  •  Complete healing as in my case took about only 2 months and the new tissue will start to develop and close the socket...

Ok.. thats a little bit about wisdom tooth and my experience in dealing with it.... thank you...

cosmo smile dental is an excellent platform for teeth removal.
After tooth extraction, it’s important for a blood clot to form to stop the bleeding and begin the healing process. Bite on a gauze pad for 30-45 minutes immediately after the appointment.
